Milan Mayor Sala says satisfied at San Siro sale vote

(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 30 – Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said Tuesday that he was satisfied with the vote in the city assembly approving the sale of the site of the San Siro stadium to AC Milan and Inter.
The plan was approved early on Tuesday after a marathon session in the assembly lasting almost 12 hours, with 24 votes in favour and 20 against.
Seven councillors belonging to Sala's centre-left coalition in the assembly voted against, while, rather than voting against, one councillor with the centre-right opposition did not take part in the vote, and the Forza Italia representatives were not present, except for one who rebelled against the party line.
"I'd say I'm satisfied at having done a great preparatory job and having tried to avoid tension in recent weeks, telling the assembly that it's up to you," Sala said.
"I have to say that I didn't put any pressure on anyone, knowing it would be a divisive issue.
"You can ask the three members of the (centre-left) Democratic Party who were against it.
"San Siro issue was, and is, a divisive issue.
"We believe we did the right thing, and the council has made its decision.
"Some divisions arose both within the ruling majority and the opposing minority, but that's normal on an issue like this".
