Nearly half new mother deaths preventable, suicide top cause

(ANSA) – ROME, DEC 2 – Nearly half of new mother deaths in Italy are preventable and the leading cause is suicide, the Higher Health Institute (ISS) said Tuesday.
Some 42% of the deaths can be prevented, deaths that occur between conception and one year after delivery or at least after pregnancy.
The leading cause is suicide, followed by cardiovascular disease and obstetric hemorrhage, said the ISS report.
Therefore, in Italy, as in all advanced economically developed countries, approximately half of maternal deaths are preventable. This is according to the latest available data from the ItOSS surveillance program, coordinated by the Women's and Developmental Health Department of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (CNAPPS) of the Italian National Institute of Health, presented at a conference held today at the ISS.
In Italy, 776 maternal deaths were recorded between conception and one year after the pregnancy in the ten years between 2011 and 2021. (ANSA).
